Web designers historically have had to use META code in the design to help popular search engines find your website.  I use Meta Tags in all my sites as a safety net so we don't miss an opportunity.  Sometimes, depending on your specific needs, it is more effective to pay a minimal fee out of your marketing budget to have your site listed amoung the different search engines.
