A key takeaway here is that SEO is both art and science. The science part comes in a data driven approach to monitoring your web stats through webmaster tools. SEO is also an art because we don’t know exactly how different elements of SEO factor into the algorithms used by search engines to grade your website. Therefore, more advanced adjustments made to your site’s SEO can require intuition rather than a predefined blueprint. The data though determines if your artistic side is a Picasso or a finger painting. The main players in the world of search engines are Google and Bing.
Google also powers AOL search and Ask.com search.
Bing also powers Yahoo! Search.
Google and Bing have separate algorithms that are used to grade your website and determine where it will show up in their search results.
Search Engine Optimization should not be confused for:
- Paid Search: or PPC (pay per click).
- SocialMedia: SEO does not directly help you get more “likes” or connections on Social Media sites.
- Magic: Solid SEO will help to drive people to your website, but no one can wave a magic wand to get you to rank #1 in every search result. Specialists telling you they can are at the very least misleading you.
- Quick: It takes time for search engines to review the changes made to your website and review new content. As you add quality content and back links (discussed later) you build your influence. It takes time to build such content, and more time for it to be recognized.
- Quick: Developing new content, implementing changes to your website, and building back links all take time. Additionally, it takes time for the search engine to find these changes. This is not an overnight process.
- One Time: You can always work to improve your SEO. Even if you currently rank #1 in a certain search, you may not stay there permanently. Adding content that attracts users and getting more websites to link to yours is something that can always be worked on.
